Why NOT Women....

Picture
Earlier this week, a colleague of mine ordered inspirational branded shirts with a variety of messages. The lady who made the shirts intentionally designed it where only the male shirts had the words CEO, Boss, Investor, Tech Savvy, I.T., A.I., etc. When my colleague asked the designer why she didn’t design those shirts for women, too, she couldn’t give her an answer. It never crossed her mind to think of a woman as a leader in business.
Hearing this really shocked me. I didn’t grow up with women in my family running businesses, but I always knew that pride and ownership in developing your own was essential. After being mentally drained in corporate America for a decade, I decided it was time to become one of the 11.6 million woman-owned firms in America. According to www.census.gov, women-owned firms account for 39% of all privately held firms in the United States. Woman-owned firms employ over 9 million employees in the U.S. which resulted in $1.7 trillion added to the economy. These numbers may sound great, but the reality is most woman-owned firms make less than $100,000 annually. In addition to low annual revenue, lady bosses have to overcome many other challenges. For instance, a male counterpart is more likely to raise over $100,000 in capital for his venture. StartupNation.com reports that women also lack a strong support system and women mentors who can advise them in their endeavors.
One thing I know we do well is connect and create. We just need a place to make that magic happen…a safe zone to discuss these matters and learn how to grow. A place to show all women and men that we can be bosses too. That is why the Government Contractors Association in partnership with my company, A Signature Flair Events (www.asignatureflair.com) will host the WOMEN WHO WIN conference on March 19, 2020 from 9am – 1pm. Join us as we empower and educate through stories of success and lessons from failure. We will highlight successful women CEOs who will share their stories of triumphs & trials in creating their enterprises. These women will share information on certifications, programs they joined, collaborations they formed, lessons they have learned, and so much more.
Women work hard and play even harder. Plan to join us in the Ladies Lounge where women can network, sip on mimosas while enjoying a massage, and shop in the Marketplace. For more details, visit www.WomenWhoWinConference.com.

Is It Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday?

Picture
I recently discovered that I lost a good friend in my circle.
For years, this close friend and I did many things together.  We produced events through our companies for several clients.  I spent numerous holidays with her and her family. She would pray for me and my various family matters. She was even the person who was there for me when I had to make the hard decision to walk away from a crumbled marriage.
I thought we were going to be friends for a lifetime…
A few years back, while hanging with her at her beautiful home, I realized some things about myself that I had to realign.  You see this friend of mine has a status quo that is not the same as mine.  She has a husband that provides a home, vacations, maintenance on vehicles, groceries, and whatever else she needs in her life.  She has the CHOICE to work or not and by golly she deserves all of that and more.  But I found myself being swallowed up in her world mentally thinking that I had the same benefits available to me.  This friend of mine was closer to retirement and established; while I was just getting started in my grind and needed to stay hungry.  I was losing my own grind and settling on someone else’s laurels that had nothing to do with me.
I had to pull away from that friendship so that I could refocus on my business grind.  The problem is that I didn’t know my absence from our friendship would equate to years apart.
In my absence from her, I was able to focus and achieve more in my personal and business goals.  My reality is if I don’t wake up each day with my own vision of success in mind to achieve what I desire, then no one else is just going to give me what they have.  Unfortunately, it just doesn’t work like that for most.  Being an entrepreneur is not a daily grind, it is a MOMENT BY MOMENT GRIND! Every penny matters.  Every decision matters.  Every relationship matters.  Every action matters.  Time waits for no one!
I didn’t know my distance from this friend would be forever.  God knows that was never my intention or desire.  I recently tried calling her a few times and she has not returned the calls or text message. With all things I go through in life, I always work to find the lesson in it. It is like they say, some things are for a reason, a season, or a lifetime.  Surprisingly to me, I do have peace with this and so it isn’t hard for me to say goodbye.

In closing, these are the lessons I take away from this friendship and decided to use in business:
1.     Always be willing to self-evaluate and not to lose focus of your ultimate goals.
2.     Don’t dwell on the past too long.  Learn from it and move on.
3.     Allow yourself to evolve as much as necessary and set your own standards for excellence.

What lessons have you learned from friendships?
