Why NOT Women....

Picture
Earlier this week, a colleague of mine ordered inspirational branded shirts with a variety of messages. The lady who made the shirts intentionally designed it where only the male shirts had the words CEO, Boss, Investor, Tech Savvy, I.T., A.I., etc. When my colleague asked the designer why she didn’t design those shirts for women, too, she couldn’t give her an answer. It never crossed her mind to think of a woman as a leader in business.
Hearing this really shocked me. I didn’t grow up with women in my family running businesses, but I always knew that pride and ownership in developing your own was essential. After being mentally drained in corporate America for a decade, I decided it was time to become one of the 11.6 million woman-owned firms in America. According to www.census.gov, women-owned firms account for 39% of all privately held firms in the United States. Woman-owned firms employ over 9 million employees in the U.S. which resulted in $1.7 trillion added to the economy. These numbers may sound great, but the reality is most woman-owned firms make less than $100,000 annually. In addition to low annual revenue, lady bosses have to overcome many other challenges. For instance, a male counterpart is more likely to raise over $100,000 in capital for his venture. StartupNation.com reports that women also lack a strong support system and women mentors who can advise them in their endeavors.
One thing I know we do well is connect and create. We just need a place to make that magic happen…a safe zone to discuss these matters and learn how to grow. A place to show all women and men that we can be bosses too. That is why the Government Contractors Association in partnership with my company, A Signature Flair Events (www.asignatureflair.com) will host the WOMEN WHO WIN conference on March 19, 2020 from 9am – 1pm. Join us as we empower and educate through stories of success and lessons from failure. We will highlight successful women CEOs who will share their stories of triumphs & trials in creating their enterprises. These women will share information on certifications, programs they joined, collaborations they formed, lessons they have learned, and so much more.
Women work hard and play even harder. Plan to join us in the Ladies Lounge where women can network, sip on mimosas while enjoying a massage, and shop in the Marketplace. For more details, visit www.WomenWhoWinConference.com.

Goodbye America for the Unforeseeable Future – Part 2

Picture

Sixty days ago, I decided the time to explore options abroad was now.  I talked about living abroad for too long and the moment crept up on me unexpectantly.  With no kids or husband in tow, I have no obligations to any soul except me.
Now that I am gone, I see this as one of the best decisions I ever made in my life.  So how was I able to pack up in less than a month to make a temporary transition away from the U.S.A.?
  1. I prayed and asked God to grant me the desires of my heart.  Without Him, I have nothing.  The permission and guidance came straight from my Creator and no other source.
  2. Review of finances to decide what it would take to live abroad.  As of today, the D.R. is one of the most affordable islands that expats from worldwide relocate to and live off their retirement pensions of $2500 per month and less.  Depending on your needs, you can find housing from as little as $275 per month to thousands of dollars.  Utilities and internet service averages under $100 per month.  You determine how much food and drink you can handle.
  3. I downsized all expenses in America.  I used to go to Ross almost every month to buy cute clothes.  That habit quickly stopped when I realized I was wearing the same thing over and over anyway.  Reduce your cell phone bills, car insurance, even your home may need to be downsized if you want to relocate temporarily or permanently.
  4. Research!  Start looking a little bit everyday at what others are saying about the ideal land you want to go to.  Do they allow citizens from your country?  What is the equivalency of your currency to theirs?  Are you able to get employment abroad?  What is the climate like?  What is the cost of living?  What type of government is in place?  Read their local newspapers.  You can never do too much research.
  5. Build relationships.  Start contacting people in that area to see if you will like it.  Even schedule some trips to visit in during seasons.  Relationships will get you into doors that your money won’t be able to do.  Do not underestimate the value of a great connection.
There are many other things to consider when living in a different area, but these are some of the fundamentals I used when deciding to go for it.  Although my decision seems rash as I really didn’t give people any notice, I have been working towards this goal for over 10 years.  Hopefully you don’t take that long to live your dream.
