Why NOT Women....

Picture
Earlier this week, a colleague of mine ordered inspirational branded shirts with a variety of messages. The lady who made the shirts intentionally designed it where only the male shirts had the words CEO, Boss, Investor, Tech Savvy, I.T., A.I., etc. When my colleague asked the designer why she didn’t design those shirts for women, too, she couldn’t give her an answer. It never crossed her mind to think of a woman as a leader in business.
Hearing this really shocked me. I didn’t grow up with women in my family running businesses, but I always knew that pride and ownership in developing your own was essential. After being mentally drained in corporate America for a decade, I decided it was time to become one of the 11.6 million woman-owned firms in America. According to www.census.gov, women-owned firms account for 39% of all privately held firms in the United States. Woman-owned firms employ over 9 million employees in the U.S. which resulted in $1.7 trillion added to the economy. These numbers may sound great, but the reality is most woman-owned firms make less than $100,000 annually. In addition to low annual revenue, lady bosses have to overcome many other challenges. For instance, a male counterpart is more likely to raise over $100,000 in capital for his venture. StartupNation.com reports that women also lack a strong support system and women mentors who can advise them in their endeavors.
One thing I know we do well is connect and create. We just need a place to make that magic happen…a safe zone to discuss these matters and learn how to grow. A place to show all women and men that we can be bosses too. That is why the Government Contractors Association in partnership with my company, A Signature Flair Events (www.asignatureflair.com) will host the WOMEN WHO WIN conference on March 19, 2020 from 9am – 1pm. Join us as we empower and educate through stories of success and lessons from failure. We will highlight successful women CEOs who will share their stories of triumphs & trials in creating their enterprises. These women will share information on certifications, programs they joined, collaborations they formed, lessons they have learned, and so much more.
Women work hard and play even harder. Plan to join us in the Ladies Lounge where women can network, sip on mimosas while enjoying a massage, and shop in the Marketplace. For more details, visit www.WomenWhoWinConference.com.

Goodbye America for the Unforeseeable Future – Part 1

Picture
When you have dreams of seeing the world and it appears that opportunity is under attack….
When you realize that other people are making plans for your existence….
When you see no end to the rat race…
When you are burned out….and frankly just pissed off….
When you are tired of TALKING about your dreams….
THEN you will do whatever it takes to create your new reality

The dream of living abroad began at the happy end of my marriage.  Yes, I say happy end because it was a good thing to experience marriage and it was a greater thing to let it go when I did.  Thank you, God! 😊  I signed the final set of divorce papers the week before my birthday and Christmas.  Almost double joy….’tis was my season to begin anew.
My first trip to D.R. was to Punta Cana.  The ride to the resort from the airport was remote and a bit depressing, but once we pulled into the Bavaro property, I was glaring at paradise.  I enjoyed every…..morsel…. of….moments….I could gather and remember.  From the sunshine, the food, the people, the culture….it all made me question why do I live in America?  I quickly began looking for real estate booklets to search for Dominican housing, but couldn’t find ads.  Leaving in dismay, I returned to America vowing to return.
Now over a decade later, the desire to be abroad never ceased.  I have traveled to numerous islands in the Caribbean, but none of them felt like home to me.  The Dominican Republic was the only oasis that quenched my thirst.
So why now?  Why did I choose to step out on faith to explore the opportunity that God prepared for me?  I had to do this now because I was afraid that I may never get this chance again.  Haven’t you heard investors say when everyone else is running from something, that is the time to go for it?  The whole world is scared out of their minds to travel to their own mother’s home let alone get on a plane to travel.  It only made sense to me to prepare for a departure during a time while the world pauses and reset.
My reset is happening abroad.  I am determining that my peace of mind surpasses any material item that America told me I am supposed to have.  It is quite apparent that America does not plan to make it a law or a God-given right for Blacks to have the right to vote at all times (each President continues to renew the act).  This system doesn’t plan to pay reparations to my people for the blood, sweat, and tears laid by my ancestors (but they give reparations to Jews from the Holocaust – who were not even in America during that war).  I am so burned out from the rhetoric of requesting freedom from an oppressor.  This system was never designed to be fair for all.  As a result, I needed to search where I can create my own piece of peace.
I can go on and on about this topic, but I rather you join me in my new journey to discover how I am creating peace.  Perhaps you have some insight to share.
